Push notifications

Reach listeners who have installed your app, directly on their phone

What are push notifications for?

A push notification appears on the phone of listeners who have installed your native mobile application (from the app stores) and have agreed to receive them: on the lock screen, in the notification centre, with your title and your message. On tap, the application opens directly to the content or link you chose: a news item, a podcast, an event, the schedule, or a web address.

It is the only channel that reaches listeners outside your station: announcing a special programme an hour in advance, reminding listeners of an event on the day itself, pushing a new podcast episode.

Who receives your notifications? Everyone who has installed your mobile application — including those who listen to another one of your stations, as the application follows all the channels on your account. Listeners on the website and on the /app version opened in a browser receive nothing. The application subscribes to a channel that is unique to you: no one else receives your notifications.

Where to find them?

In the "Web Broadcasting" > "Application" menu, under the "Notifications" tab. The tab is reserved for accounts that have access to the application ("Radio Site" or "Mobile Application" option, or an ongoing trial). If you manage several stations, the notifications shown are those of the station selected at the top of the page, and the times displayed are those of that station ("Times are those of your station (UTC±n)").

Good to know: As long as sending has not been configured for your application, a banner indicates "Sending is not yet set up." You can already write and schedule your notifications: they are saved and will be sent as soon as the configuration is in place. The "Test mode." banner means that notifications are logged without any device actually being notified.

Your notifications list

Four counters summarise activity: "Notifications" (total), "Sent", "Pending" and "Failures". The "Push notifications" table lists each notification with its thumbnail, title and message, its target ("Targeted content", "Link", or "Deleted content" if the target has been removed), the "Sending" column (immediate, scheduled for a date, recurring with its days and the number of sends already dispatched), the "Status" and the "Opens".

Above the table, a "Search…" field and four filters: "All statuses" (Draft, Pending, Sent, Failed, Cancelled), "All sending types" (Immediate, Scheduled, Recurring), "All types" and "All platforms". The "Actions" column offers, depending on the case, "Edit", "Duplicate" (a copy labelled "(copy)" opens, ready to reuse), "Send now", "Stop" / "Reactivate" for a recurring notification, and "Delete".

The "New notification" button opens the creation drawer. While the list is empty: "No notifications yet. Create the first one to alert your listeners."

Creating a notification

The drawer is read from top to bottom, in four sections.

"Information"

  • "Title" (150 characters max), for example "New show tonight".
  • "Message" (300 characters max): the text displayed in the notification banner. This is what your listeners see on their lock screen.
  • "Detailed content" (optional): rich text displayed when the listener opens the notification in the application.

"Configuration"

  • "Type": "Information", "Alert", "Urgent" or "With image".
  • "Platform": "All", "Android" or "iOS".
  • "Link to open": the address opened on tap (for example mystation.com/news). Not needed if you are targeting content below: the field is then disabled ("Disabled: an in-app content is already targeted.").

"In-app content"

The "Search for a news item, podcast, event, programme…" field browses the content of your Radio Site. Choose an item: on tap, the application will open it directly (a news item, a podcast, an event; a programme opens the Schedule tab). The "Pre-fill" button copies the title and text of the content into the fields ("Fields pre-filled from content."); "Remove target" clears it. The "On tap, the app will open" line summarises what will happen.

"Scheduling"

  • "Immediate" — sent as soon as it is saved.
  • "Scheduled" — at a specific "Date" and "Time".
  • "Recurring" — every week, on the chosen "Days" (shortcuts: "Every day", "Monday to Friday"), at the specified time. A recurring notification is sent again on each ticked day: it continues until you stop it.

Times are those of your station ("Your station\'s time (UTC±n).").

"Notification image"

Two tabs: "File" ("Drop an image or click to choose", JPG, PNG, GIF or WEBP, 5 MB maximum) or "Web address" (the URL of a visual already online). A preview is displayed, with "Remove image".

Saving

Three buttons depending on the scheduling: "Draft" saves the notification without sending it; "Send" (immediate) dispatches it straight away; "Schedule" (scheduled or recurring) queues it for the specified time. "Notification sent." or "Saved." confirms the action.

Example

Vibe FM is launching a new show every Thursday at 8 pm and wants to alert its listeners each week, one hour before.

Target: the programme in "In-app content"→ "Pre-fill"→ "Recurring", Thursday, 19:00→ "Schedule"

Why: a recurring notification is set up once and runs automatically every Thursday. When the show ends, clicking "Stop" in the list is all it takes: nothing to delete — the notification remains "Cancelled" and can be reactivated.

Tracking opens

The "Opens" column counts the number of devices that actually opened the notification, measured on arrival in your application ("n open(s) by n device(s)" on hover). An external link, however, cannot be measured. The number of people who simply saw the notification pass by is not known: sending is done via a channel, without the server knowing who is listening.

Tip: Target in-app content rather than an external link whenever possible: you retain open tracking, and the listener stays in your app with the live stream still playing.

Frequently asked questions

I deleted the news item targeted by an already-scheduled notification. The notification remains valid and simply opens your application; the list flags it as "Deleted content".

Can I target just one of my stations? No: the application belongs to the account, and all its installers receive the notification. Include the station name in the title if you manage several.

A notification shows "Failed" — what should I do? Open it ("Edit") and resend it with "Send now". If the failure persists, contact support: sending depends on the configuration of your native application.

Do notifications use up credits? No.
