Connected Speaker

"Alexa, open your radio": your station on smart speakers

What is "Connected Speaker" for?

This service creates and publishes a dedicated Alexa skill for your radio station on the Amazon store. Once live, your listeners can launch your station by voice — "Alexa, open your radio" — on an Amazon Echo speaker or any Alexa-compatible device (Sonos, Yamaha, Denon, Bose, JBL, PURE…), with the currently playing track displayed in the Alexa app.

We handle all the technical work: the skill, the Amazon submission, the stream, the now-playing track, and ongoing maintenance (stream changes, logo or name updates) for as long as your station is active with us. All you need to do is fill in the form and sign one document.

  • Price: £89, as a one-time payment, with no additional subscription, for your first station.
  • One skill corresponds to one station. Each additional station on the same account is £24 (the "multi-station rate").
  • Prerequisite: a radio station that is set up and online. Without a station, the page displays "No station on this account" with a "Set up my station" button; if the station has not yet been configured, it shows "Station not configured".
Good to know: The page shows a real example before any purchase: the demo skill "Vertige Radio", published on Amazon, with a "View the demo skill on Amazon" button. This is exactly what you will receive.

Where to find it?

In the "Web Broadcasting" > "Connected Speaker" menu, at /dashboard/enceinte-connectee. If your account manages several stations, the "Station" selector at the top of the page lets you choose which one: each station has its own status ("not activated" until it has been ordered) and the displayed price adjusts based on the number of stations already activated.

What the service includes

  • "Dedicated Alexa skill" — your own skill published on the Amazon store, invoked by your station's name.
  • "Compatible speakers" — Amazon Echo and Alexa-enabled speakers from Sonos, Yamaha, Denon, Bose, JBL, and PURE.
  • "Custom invocation" — your station name becomes a voice command.
  • "Now playing" — the currently playing track appears on the speaker and in the Alexa app, in real time.
  • "Wake-up routine" — your listeners can set up a routine to wake up or unwind with your station.
  • "Extended reach" — a new way to be discovered, without going through a directory or search engine.

The "How it works" section summarises the four steps we handle: verifying the invocation name, creating the skill (stream, logo, metadata), submitting and monitoring Amazon validation, then ongoing maintenance.

Filling in "Your Alexa listing"

Before paying, you fill in the form that will be used to create the skill. The "Activate the service" button remains inactive until the form has been saved ("Please enter your invocation name below first").

  • "Launch phrase": the invocation name, preceded by "Alexa, open". It must be in lowercase, with no digits or accented characters, and two words are recommended (for example radio soleil), with a minimum of 3 characters. Input is validated in real time: a word forbidden by Amazon ("alexa", "echo", "open", "launch", "play", "skill", "app"…) will be rejected, and a single-word name triggers the warning "Single word: Amazon may reject it. Consider adding 'radio' if needed." The page shows you the result: "Your listeners will say: 'Alexa, open …'".
  • "Official station website": submitted to Amazon as proof that the station genuinely exists.
  • "Name displayed on the Amazon store".
  • "Tagline (160 characters max)": defaults to "Listen to your radio live on your smart speaker."
  • "Listing description" and "Keywords (comma-separated)" (default: "radio, music, live, webradio").
  • "Publication languages": French (France), French (Canada), English (United Kingdom), English (United States), Spanish (Spain), German, Italian, Portuguese (Brazil). The skill is distributed worldwide.

Finish by clicking "Save" ("Information saved.").

The Alexa listing logo

The "Alexa listing logo" section uses your station's logo. It must be square, at least 512 × 512 px, in PNG or JPEG format (WebP accepted). We automatically generate the two visuals required by Amazon (108 × 108 and 512 × 512) on a solid background: transparency is not accepted by the store. Leave the field empty to keep the current logo. A logo that is too small or in an unsupported format will be ignored with an explicit message ("it must be at least 512 × 512 pixels").

Tip: Choose an invocation name that can be pronounced without hesitation and that does not resemble any common command: this is the first thing Amazon checks, and it is what your listeners will say out loud.

The name usage authorisation (required)

Amazon will only accept your station name as a voice command on one condition: that you confirm the name is legitimately yours. Without this document, the skill will be rejected, and the page blocks payment until it has been submitted ("Please upload the signed authorisation below first: without it, Amazon will reject the skill."). The "Name usage authorisation" section displays a "Required" badge, which changes to "Received" once the file has been uploaded.

  • "Download the authorisation": it is already pre-filled with your details (button: "Download the pre-filled authorisation").
  • Add the date, your signature, and your stamp.
  • Upload it in the same section: PDF or a clear photo, 10 MB maximum. Uploading a new file replaces the previous one; "View uploaded authorisation" lets you open it.

The document is submitted to Amazon's certification team along with your application.

Example

Radio Soleil fills in its form on a Monday evening and wants to pay straight away.

Form saved→ Authorisation downloaded, signed, and stamped→ Photo uploaded: "Received" badge→ "Activate the service"

Why: a skill submitted without proof of name ownership is rejected by Amazon, which adds a round trip of several days. Signing the document before paying avoids this delay.

Activating the service and paying

The pricing card displays "One-time payment" (or "One-time payment — multi-station rate" for an additional station, with the note "Additional station: £24 instead of £89"). The "Activate the service" button opens the secure card payment (Stripe). After payment, the page confirms: "Thank you! Your Connected Speaker service is now active. We are creating your Alexa skill and submitting it to Amazon — track progress below."

If the payment is cancelled, nothing is lost: "Payment cancelled. You can restart the order whenever you like."

Tracking progress

Once the service is activated, the page becomes a progress tracker. The "Progress" section displays a five-step timeline:

  1. "Service activated" — payment received, file opened.
  2. "Invocation name validated" — we verify that Alexa understands it and that it is available.
  3. "Skill created" — stream, now-playing track, and visuals connected.
  4. "Amazon validation" — submitted to the store, response within 2 to 5 business days.
  5. "Live" — "Alexa, open …" works on all compatible speakers.

The status badge reflects these steps: "Paid — in preparation", "Validated — in queue", "Creating skill", "Under Amazon review", "Live". Two special statuses:

  • "Rejected by Amazon": the "Amazon feedback" is displayed as received, and the page states "We are correcting and resubmitting the application. No action is required from you."
  • "Suspended": the skill has been removed, for example if the station is no longer active with us.

When the skill is live, the "View my skill on the Amazon store" button opens its public listing. The summary section shows the station, the activation date, the amount paid, the Amazon submission date, and the go-live date.

Good to know: Validation timescales depend on Amazon, not VestaRadio. A file that remains "Under Amazon review" for a few days is perfectly normal.

"Share with your listeners"

This section lists ready-to-copy phrases that launch your station: "Alexa, open your radio", "Alexa, launch your radio", "Alexa, play your radio". Also consider "Alexa, wake me up with your radio" in routines.

These phrases only work once the skill has been validated by Amazon: wait for the "Live" status before announcing them on air.

The "Technical links in use" section shows the "Audio stream broadcast on the speaker" and the "Now playing (JSON)" connected to the skill.

Editing the listing after ordering

The "Skill listing" section remains editable: launch phrase, official website, "Display name", "Tagline", "Description", "Keywords", languages, then "Save changes". If the application is with Amazon or already live, the page warns: "The application is with Amazon: your changes will be applied at the next skill update."

Frequently asked questions

Is a subscription required? No: £89 once (£24 per additional station). Maintenance is included for as long as your station is active with us.

Do my listeners need to install anything? No. Once the skill is live, the phrase "Alexa, open …" is all that is needed on any Alexa speaker.

Can I change the invocation name? Yes, from the "Skill listing" section. The change goes through a new Amazon validation.

What about Google Home? This service covers Alexa. For other smart speakers, share the direct stream URL with your listeners from the "Audio stream & software" tab in the Radio player.
